4 Countries Discovery
12 DAYS · ZAMBIA · ZIMBABWE · BOTSWANA · SOUTH AFRICA · STARTS FROM COCHIN
EXPERIENCES:
Victoria Falls both sides · Chobe safari boat and game drive · Cape Peninsula and Table Mountain

Victoria Falls from the side you can stand on, and bush you cross on foot rather than through a windscreen.

Almost every safari in Africa happens from a vehicle. Zambia is where the walking safari began, in South Luangwa in the 1950s, and it is still the country that does it best. The difference is not small. In a jeep you look at animals. On foot with an armed ranger you read tracks, work out what came through overnight, and approach on the wind. The pace drops, and the attention rises. Zambia also holds the larger share of Victoria Falls. Zimbabwe has the panorama, Zambia has the edge. You walk out onto the Knife Edge Bridge, and the spray comes straight up at you.
A big, thinly travelled country built around one waterfall and the best walking safaris in Africa.

The two countries share Victoria Falls and give you completely different things. From Zimbabwe you see the whole width of it face on, which is the photograph everyone knows. From Zambia you are on top of it. Paths run along the lip, the Knife Edge Bridge takes you across the gorge through the spray, and in the low water months you can sit in Devil's Pool at the very edge with the drop in front of you. Neither is the wrong choice. Seeing both in one trip is better than either, and the border crossing is short.
See Both Sides
You set off at first light with a ranger and a scout, single file, no vehicle. The first thing that goes is speed. The second is the illusion that you were seeing much from the jeep. Tracks in the dust tell you what came through in the night. Dung tells you how long ago. You approach downwind, stop when told, and stand very still while something large decides you are not worth the effort. Nobody comes back from a walking safari talking about the same things they talk about after a game drive. It is the reason Zambia keeps its reputation among people who have already done Africa several times.

Zambia's two attractions peak at opposite ends of the year. The falls run heaviest around March to May, when spray blocks much of the view, and open up by September and October, when Devil's Pool also becomes swimmable. Game viewing peaks in the same September to October window, with many bush camps closed November to April. Malaria precautions apply, and yellow fever needs attention too, since Zambia sits on India's risk list and the certificate is often checked on the way home. Visa rules change, so we confirm the current position and handle the paperwork.

Zimbabwe gives you the wide face-on view. Zambia puts you on the edge, with paths along the lip and Devil's Pool in the low water months. Our route includes both.
May to October for wildlife, with September and October at the peak. The falls are at full volume around March to May, but the spray blocks the view, and they are clearest around September and October.
Game viewing on foot with an armed ranger rather than from a vehicle. It started in Zambia's South Luangwa and is still done best there.
Yes. Our 4 Countries Discovery route runs on set dates from Cochin, taking in Zambia alongside Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. The full plan is on the itinerary page.
Malaria precautions are needed. Yellow fever usually matters for returning to India rather than entering Zambia, and it has to be arranged well ahead.
Route through a Gulf hub, Nairobi or Johannesburg, into Lusaka or Livingstone. On the four-country route, the flights are part of the package.
