Mauritius, the Island Where You Already Know the Food

Lagoons inside a reef, mountains behind the beach, and a Shiva temple by a crater lake. Four hours of ocean from home.

A Familiar Island

You Will Hear Bhojpuri on the Beach

You Will Hear Bhojpuri on the Beach

Most beach islands feel far from home. Mauritius does the opposite, and the reason is history. From 1834, ships carried indentured labourers from India to work the sugar estates here, and their descendants now make up most of the population. So the island runs on things you recognise: temples in the villages, Diwali and Maha Shivaratri as public holidays, roti and dal puri sold from carts, and Hindi, Bhojpuri, Tamil, and Telugu spoken alongside Creole and French. None of that takes away from the beach. Lagoons here sit inside a reef ringing almost the whole island, so the water stays flat, warm, and shallow, and you get the resort holiday you came for, in a place that never needs the food explained to you.

One Island, Four Corners

Every Coast Does Something Different

Mauritius is small enough to cross in a couple of hours, so where you stay matters more than how much you move.

  • The North

    The North

Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie

Busiest and easiest, with the best range of restaurants, shops, and boat trips. Good for a first visit or a family.

  • The East

    The East

Belle Mare and Île aux Cerfs

Long white beaches, calmer resorts, and the clearest lagoon water on the island. Breezier than the west.

  • The West and Le Morne

    The West and Le Morne

A basalt mountain rising straight out of the sea, listed by UNESCO for its history as a refuge for escaped slaves

Sunsets, dolphins off Tamarin, and the best water for kitesurfing.

  • The Interior

    The Interior

Chamarel's seven coloured earths, the waterfalls and forest of Black River Gorges, and Ganga Talao

Half a day inland changes the whole trip.

Inside the Reef

The Sea Never Really Gets Rough

A Ring of Coral Around Almost the Whole Island
What the Reef Does

A Ring of Coral Around Almost the Whole Island

A coral reef circles nearly all of Mauritius, sitting a few hundred metres offshore. It takes the force out of the open ocean before it reaches you. What is left inside is a lagoon rather than a sea. Flat water, shallow enough to stand in a long way out, and warm all year. Children can swim without anyone standing over them. Snorkelling starts at the sand. Beyond the reef the drop is real, which is where the diving and the deep sea fishing happen. Blue Bay Marine Park is the easiest place to see the coral properly, by glass bottom boat if you would rather stay dry.

There Is Water From the Ganges in a Crater Here

High in the south west, inside an old volcanic crater, sits a lake Mauritians call Ganga Talao. Water from the Ganges was poured into it, and it's been treated as sacred since. A tall Shiva statue stands at the entrance, with temples lining the water and families making small offerings on quiet days. At Maha Shivaratri, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims walk here barefoot, carrying decorated wooden kanwars, making it the largest Hindu gathering outside India, on a small island almost no beach brochure mentions.

Most of the Decision Is Which Coast
What Shapes It

Most of the Decision Is Which Coast

The route is not the hard part in Mauritius. The island is small and the roads are good, so you are not planning around transfers or internal flights. What matters is the hotel and the coast it sits on. North for activity and food. East for the quietest water. West for sunsets and mountains. That single choice sets the tone of the whole week, and it is the thing worth getting right. Tell us your dates, who is travelling, and whether you want busy or quiet. Cost comes down almost entirely to the resort, so send your group size and we will come back with real options rather than a range.
