Most African safaris involve a lot of moving. Long road transfers, small aircraft between camps, and half a day lost every time you change region. Malawi does not work like that. The country is narrow and the good places sit close together. You can do a proper Big Five reserve and then be on the lake shore a few hours later, by road, without a single internal flight. The lake itself is the other surprise. It runs most of the length of the country, holds more fish species than any other lake on earth, and is clear enough to snorkel in. Fresh water, no salt, no tide, and almost nobody on the beach.

More Fish Than Any Other Lake on Earth
Lake Malawi holds around a thousand species of cichlid, and almost all of them live nowhere else. They are small, bright, and territorial, and they sit in the rocks a few metres off the shore. You do not need a boat or a licence. You walk in from the sand with a mask and they are there. Visibility runs to twenty metres or more in the clear months, which is better than plenty of sea diving. Kayaks, sailing, and island hopping fill the rest of it. Part of the lake is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed for the fish rather than the scenery.

Twenty Years Ago These Parks Were Empty
Majete had been stripped. Poaching had taken almost everything, and by the early 2000s there was very little left worth protecting. What happened next is the reason Malawi is worth your attention. A long conservation partnership brought animals back in, species by species, and rebuilt the reserve from close to zero. Elephants were later moved in their hundreds between parks in one of the largest translocations ever attempted. So the wildlife you see here is not a remnant. It is a recovery, and the people working the reserves know exactly what it took.
This One Is Simpler Than Most
Malawi asks less of the planning than Botswana or Madagascar. The distances are short, the roads between the main places are reasonable, and you rarely need to build the trip around a flight schedule.
