The Temple That Moved to Higher Ground.
Abu Simbel should not exist today. When the High Dam's rising lake threatened to drown it in the 1960s, the world refused to lose the four colossal statues of Ramses II carved into the cliff face, and an international rescue cut the entire temple into over a thousand giant blocks, lifted it sixty metres up the cliff, and rebuilt it perfectly on higher ground. The engineering matched the pharaohs' own. Today the colossi sit exactly as intended, and twice a year the rising sun still reaches down the temple's axis to light the inner sanctuary, just as it did three thousand years ago. The tour reaches it at dawn from the cruise, the desert road arriving as the first light hits the giants.
