Congo has no open plains, no jeeps racing to a sighting. It's thick green rainforest, and you walk to find the animals, going slowly, listening. The reward is one of the largest populations of western lowland gorillas left anywhere, plus forest elephants, buffalo, bongo antelope, and a canopy full of birds. Few travellers make it here, since camps are small and permits limited. We take the access part off your hands.

You Walk In, and They Do Not Move Away
A Morning on Foot Through Thick Forest
The walk starts early. A tracker goes ahead reading broken stems and fresh feeding signs, and the group follows in single file. It can take twenty minutes, or it can take three hours. The ground is uneven, the air is heavy, and the forest closes in on both sides. Then it opens, and a family is in front of you, feeding. Groups are kept small and the time you spend with them is capped, both to protect the animals and to keep them used to people. It is quiet, close, and nothing like watching wildlife from a vehicle.

Rainforest is hard to watch wildlife in. The trees are too thick, and animals are ten metres away and invisible. The bais solve it. These are open, swampy clearings where the soil holds minerals, and animals come out into the open to get them. Sit at the edge of Lango in the late afternoon, and the clearing fills. Forest elephants first, often families with young. Buffalo behind them. Birds working the shallows. You are on foot or on a raised platform, not in a vehicle, and the sound carries.

Yes. Congo holds one of the largest populations of western lowland gorillas anywhere. Families in the Ngaga area of Odzala have been studied for years, so they stay calm while small groups watch on foot.
Seven to nine days works well. That covers the gorillas, the forest clearings, and time on the river without spending the trip in transit.
Fly via Addis Ababa or a Gulf hub into Brazzaville. From there it is a small charter flight to the park and a road transfer through the forest.
Yellow fever vaccination is required to enter, and the certificate has to be arranged well ahead. Malaria precautions are also needed. Talk to your doctor early, and we will confirm the current requirements for your dates.
It is a walk on uneven forest ground in humid air, and it can last from twenty minutes to a few hours. Reasonable fitness helps. Most camps also set a minimum age, so tell us who is travelling.
